“We would like to thank Native Architects and their team for the exceptional care, expertise, and hard work they put into our extension and internal alterations. We are absolutely delighted with the result, which has been much admired by friends and family alike.
The extension is a perfect addition to our home – sufficiently similar yet distinct, as the planners required – and it feels completely integral to the original building. The way it extends the house into the garden is seamless and incredibly successful. We now spend most of our time there and use it as our main space for entertaining.
Comfort was clearly central to the design. The space works beautifully throughout the year, remaining cool in summer and warm in winter thanks to the combination of underfloor heating and generous openings to the garden.
Overall, the project has been an outstanding success. We are extremely grateful to the whole team and would happily recommend Native Architects to anyone considering a similar project.”

“I appointed Native Architects to obtain planning for the conversion of a small stone outbuilding into a holiday annexe adjacent to my house. With historic buildings expertise and a good track record for rural design they designed a scheme that was sympathetic to the nature of the building and took advantage of the existing stone detailing and openings. The building is compact but the design was space efficient with the position of doors and windows optimising views across the fields towards open farmland and also Brimham Rocks in Nidderdale, which is a National Landscape in North Yorkshire.
Located in a rural setting meant that the BNG regulations had to be adhered to. Biodiversity Net Gain is a mandatory requirement in England for new developments to improve biodiversity by at least 10%. This means that, after converting the building the natural environment had to be in a measurably better state than before, achieved by enhancing the local habitats around the house and adjacent fields. Native Architects helped navigated both the planning legislation and the BNG legislation with skill and efficiency and I was confident in their ability to help me achieve our development to provide valuable income in the future.
The scope of works included native tree planting, fixing bat boxes etc to support wildlife, the building conversion using local traditional and natural insulation products and the installation of a separate ground mounted solar panel array. It has been a much longer process to gain planning permission than we ever envisaged but Native Architects expertly navigated us through the process and I would wholeheartedly recommend their friendly professional team.”

“English Heritage Trust is currently working with Native Architects on a roof renewal and sustainability project at Whitby Abbey. The project is focused on the seventeenth-century banqueting house, a Grade I Listed Building, which is within the area of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. This building serves as the visitor’s centre for the site, containing retail and office areas, and a museum space. Following storm damage English Heritage needed to replace the roof to this building and have used the opportunity to pursue sustainably improvements, by adding PV solar panels and making adjustments for future rainfall levels, whilst also improving some H&S aspects. Native were our chosen designers after a rigorous tender process. Their previous conservation works to buildings with a high heritage significance and design of decarbonisation strategies made them the ideal firm for us on this project.
Throughout the process they have been enthusiastic, proactive and diligent. They undertake all aspects of work in a professional manner, yet are very personable and a pleasure to work with. Native have thoroughly and consistently addressed the works with a measured and appropriate approach, given that Whitby Abbey is an internationally significant heritage asset.
They have been conscientious in regards to the site remaining open during the works, and have considered the health and safety aspects of work taking place on a popular heritage site.
This element was crucial for us as it means English Heritage will be able to continue operating the site during works, and in a safe manner. They have a reassuring understanding of the consent procedures, and have worked in tandem with our internal curatorial staff to ensure a smooth and successful outcome. Native are clearly at the forefront of decarbonisation and sustainability design, especially when applied to the historic environment. I would thoroughly recommend them and hope to work with them again in the future”.
