Native have recently completed a progressive project at Whitby Abbey Visitor centre, a Grade 1 listed building managed by English Heritage. The original aim of the project was to replace a faulty zinc roof covering damaged in 2021 by Storm Arwen. The opportunity presented itself to consider the wider effects of climate change and mitigate these where achievable within the project scope.
A feasibility study determined that adding PV panels onto the existing roof structure to provide solar generated electricity for the building would be viable together with the re-design of the rainwater disposal system and improved access to the roof to ensure maintenance could be carried out more easily.
