Native was contracted to convert a disused historic stable and C20 garage, both ancillary buildings within the curtilage of a C19 Grade II listed dwelling, alongside associated landscape works to the rear garden.

The clients wished to sensitively update both structures, allowing for the stable to be retrofitted into a studio with shower and kitchenette, replace an adjoining greenhouse, relocate/conceal an oil tank and convert the garage to a workshop/store.

For the conversion of the stable, preservation of the relationship between its historic frontage and the main house was essential. Existing openings for doors and windows were therefore retained, with any replacements aligning with the historic aesthetic of the period.

Conversion work included replacement of the roof structure, finished with matching pantiles, along with woodfibre and cork insulation, lime plaster and clay paint to the walls and ceiling. These sustainable buildups allow for moisture regulation, prevention of damp and mitigation of deterioration of the historic structure whilst making the studio suitable for human comfort. A new conservation rooflight and solid fuel stove were introduced to the portion of the stable screened from the main house.

The rear of the stable received a new patio with a zinc clad roof covering. Combined with new fully glazed patio access doors, these alterations allow for views of the unobstructed countryside and a new outdoor function area concealed from the main house.

The converted garage received a zinc clad roof and heat-treated pine exterior cladding, refreshing the C20 outbuilding with a contemporary appearance that remained subservient to the listed building. We were delighted, as the project progressed, the client reached out to us for additional adjoining separate works to the entry and drive aisle to the rear garden.

The successful completion of the project provides the clients with more space to engage in the activities they enjoy and share with their loved ones.
